Clothes and Wearing

Japanese uses different verbs for "wear" depending on where the item goes. This lesson covers the core verbs and basic clothing items.

Which verb to use for "wear"?

きる vs きる

Don't confuse 着る (kiru, to wear) with 切る (kiru, to cut). Same pronunciation, different kanji!

Removing item

Taking off clothes — Use ぬぐ（脱ぐ） for most items:

• くつを ぬぐ (take off shoes)
• ふくを ぬぐ (take off clothes)

For accessories, use はずす（外す） or とる（取る）:

• めがねを はずす (take off glasses)
• とけいを はずす (take off watch)

する is flexible — する can replace つける for many accessories: とけいをする、ネクタイをする

All "wear" verbs use the particle を to mark the clothing item:

In Context

• さむいから、コートを きてください。 — samui kara, kooto o kite kudasai. — It's cold, so please wear a coat.
• まいにち くつしたを はきます。 — mainichi kutsushita o hakimasu. — I wear socks every day.

Special Cases

ている = state, not action — With clothing verbs, ている describes a current state ("is wearing") rather than an ongoing action:

• きている = is wearing (right now)
• きます = will wear / wears (habit)
