Weather Forecast Vocabulary

When watching Japanese weather forecasts:

• てんきよほう (天気予報) — weather forecast
• さいこうきおん (最高気温) — high temperature
• さいていきおん (最低気温) — low temperature
• こうすいかくりつ (降水確率) — chance of precipitation

Examples:

• きょうは さむい ですね。 — It's cold today, isn't it?
  • kyou wa samui desu ne.
• なつは あつい です。 — Summer is hot.
  • natsu wa atsui desu.
• あたたかく なりましたね。 — It's gotten warm, hasn't it?
  • atatakaku narimashita ne.

あつい vs あつい

Don't confuse 暑い (atsui, hot weather) with 熱い (atsui, hot to touch). Same pronunciation, different kanji!

• きょうは 暑い です。— Today is hot. (weather)
• このスープは 熱い です。— This soup is hot. (temperature of object)

つめたい vs さむい

• 寒い (さむい) = cold weather/air temperature
• 冷たい (つめたい) = cold to touch (drinks, ice, water)

Example:

• きょうは さむい です。— Today is cold.
• つめたい みずを ください。— Please give me cold water.
