Basic Numbers

This lesson introduces the core number vocabulary you need to know. Once you've memorized these, you'll learn how to combine them to read any number in the next lesson.

Numbers 1-10โ€‹

These are the foundation of all Japanese numbers. Memorize these first!

1ไธ€ใ„ใกichione
2ไบŒใซnitwo
3ไธ‰ใ•ใ‚“santhree
4ๅ››ใ‚ˆใ‚“ / ใ—yon / shifour
5ไบ”ใ”gofive
6ๅ…ญใ‚ใrokusix
7ไธƒใชใช / ใ—ใกnana / shichiseven
8ๅ…ซใฏใกhachieight
9ไนใใ‚…ใ† / ใkyuu / kunine
10ๅใ˜ใ‚…ใ†juuten

Why Two Readings?โ€‹

Some numbers have alternative pronunciations:

4 (ๅ››): ใ‚ˆใ‚“ is preferred; ใ— sounds like ๆญป (shi - death) 7 (ไธƒ): ใชใช is preferred; ใ—ใก can be confused with ใ— (4)
9 (ไน): ใใ‚…ใ† is preferred; ใ sounds like ่‹ฆ (ku - suffering)

Which Reading to Use?

Generally use ใ‚ˆใ‚“, ใชใช, and ใใ‚…ใ† unless you're in specific contexts like:

  • Dates: ๅ››ๆœˆ is ใ—ใŒใค (April)
  • Counting specific objects with traditional counters

Numbers 11-20โ€‹

Once you know 1-10, Japanese numbers follow a simple pattern:

NumberKanjiHiraganaRomajiBreakdown
11ๅไธ€ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ„ใกjuuichiๅ + ไธ€ (10 + 1)
12ๅไบŒใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใซjuuniๅ + ไบŒ (10 + 2)
13ๅไธ‰ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ•ใ‚“juusanๅ + ไธ‰ (10 + 3)
14ๅๅ››ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ‚ˆใ‚“juuyonๅ + ๅ›› (10 + 4)
15ๅไบ”ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ”juugoๅ + ไบ” (10 + 5)
16ๅๅ…ญใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใ‚ใjuurokuๅ + ๅ…ญ (10 + 6)
17ๅไธƒใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใชใชjuunanaๅ + ไธƒ (10 + 7)
18ๅๅ…ซใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใฏใกjuuhachiๅ + ๅ…ซ (10 + 8)
19ๅไนใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใใ‚…ใ†juukyuuๅ + ไน (10 + 9)
20ไบŒๅใซใ˜ใ‚…ใ†nijuuไบŒ + ๅ (2 + 10)

Pattern: ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† + [1-9] = 11-19

Place Value Unitsโ€‹

These are the building blocks for larger numbers:

UnitKanjiHiraganaRomajiValue
Tenๅใ˜ใ‚…ใ†juu10
Hundred็™พใฒใ‚ƒใhyaku100
Thousandๅƒใ›ใ‚“sen1,000

Hundred Millionๅ„„ใŠใoku100,000,000
Trillionๅ…†ใกใ‚‡ใ†chou1,000,000,000,000
Japanese vs English Grouping

Japanese groups numbers by 4 digits instead of 3:

  • English: 1,000,000 (million)
  • Japanese: 100,0000 (็™พไธ‡ - hyakuman - "hundred ten-thousands")

Quick Examplesโ€‹

Here are some examples of how numbers combine:

  • 23 = ใซใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใ•ใ‚“ (20 + 3)
  • 99 = ใใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใใ‚…ใ† (90 + 9)
  • 100 = ใฒใ‚ƒใ
  • 1,000 = ใ›ใ‚“
  • 10,000 = ใ„ใกใพใ‚“ (1 ร— ไธ‡)
