Reading Numbers

Learn how to read any number in Japanese, including sound changes and the unique 4-digit grouping system.

Prerequisites

Make sure you've learned the Basic Numbers (1-10 and place value units) before starting this lesson!

Quick Reference: Basic Numbers (1-10)โ€‹

NumberHiraganaRomajiEnglish
1ใ„ใกichione
2ใซnitwo
3ใ•ใ‚“santhree
4ใ‚ˆใ‚“ / ใ—yon / shifour
5ใ”gofive
6ใ‚ใrokusix
7ใชใช / ใ—ใกnana / shichiseven
8ใฏใกhachieight
9ใใ‚…ใ† / ใkyuu / kunine
10ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†juuten
Choosing Between Readings

For 4, prefer ใ‚ˆใ‚“ over ใ— in most everyday contexts. For 7, prefer ใชใช over ใ—ใก in most everyday contexts. ใ— and ใ—ใก are sometimes avoided because ใ— sounds like death (ๆญป).

1 (ใ„ใก) is usually omitted before ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† (10), ใฒใ‚ƒใ (100), and ใ›ใ‚“ (1,000):

  • ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† (10), not ใ„ใกใ˜ใ‚…ใ†
  • ใฒใ‚ƒใ (100), not ใ„ใกใฒใ‚ƒใ
  • ใ›ใ‚“ (1,000), not ใ„ใกใ›ใ‚“

However, ใ„ใก is kept before ใพใ‚“ (10,000): ใ„ใกใพใ‚“ โœ“

Number Grouping Systemโ€‹

Important: Japanese numbers are grouped by 4 digits, not 3 like in English!

English: 1,000,000 (groups of 3)
Japanese: 100,0000 (groups of 4)

Visual Groupingโ€‹

                  1 0 ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† (10)
1 0 0 ใฒใ‚ƒใ (100)
1 0 0 0 ใ›ใ‚“ (1,000)

Reading Examplesโ€‹

Small Numbers (1-99)โ€‹

Pattern: [number] + ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† + [number]

  • 10 = ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† (juu)
  • 23 = ใซใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใ•ใ‚“ (nijuu san) โ†’ 2ร—10 + 3
  • 45 = ใ‚ˆใ‚“ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใ” (yonjuu go) โ†’ 4ร—10 + 5
  • 78 = ใชใชใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใฏใก (nanajuu hachi) โ†’ 7ร—10 + 8
  • 99 = ใใ‚…ใ†ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใใ‚…ใ† (kyuujuu kyuu) โ†’ 9ร—10 + 9

Large Numbersโ€‹

Ten Thousands (ไธ‡ - man)โ€‹

In Japanese, 10,000 is a single unit called ใพใ‚“ (man).

NumberHiraganaRomajiEnglish
10,000ใ„ใกใพใ‚“ichimanten thousand
20,000ใซใพใ‚“nimantwenty thousand
50,000ใ”ใพใ‚“gomanfifty thousand
100,000ใ˜ใ‚…ใ†ใพใ‚“juumanone hundred thousand

Combining Unitsโ€‹

12,000,000 = 1,200ไธ‡ (sen nihyaku man)

Read as: ใ›ใ‚“ ใซใฒใ‚ƒใ ใพใ‚“

Example: 20,500,000

  • Group by 4: 2050 | 0000
  • Read: ใซใ›ใ‚“ ใ”ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใพใ‚“ (nisen gojuu man)

Examplesโ€‹

  • 1,234 โ†’ ใ›ใ‚“ ใซใฒใ‚ƒใ ใ•ใ‚“ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใ‚ˆใ‚“ (sen nihyaku sanjuu yon)
  • 5,678 โ†’ ใ”ใ›ใ‚“ ใ‚ใฃใดใ‚ƒใ ใชใชใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใฏใก (gosen roppyaku nanajuu hachi)
  • 10,000 โ†’ ใ„ใกใพใ‚“ (ichiman) - Grouped as 1,0000
  • 12,345,678 โ†’ ใ›ใ‚“ ใซใฒใ‚ƒใ ใ•ใ‚“ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใ‚ˆใ‚“ ใพใ‚“ ใ”ใ›ใ‚“ ใ‚ใฃใดใ‚ƒใ ใชใชใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใฏใก
    • (sen nihyaku sanjuu yon man gosen roppyaku nanajuu hachi)
    • Grouped as 1234,5678

Common Mistakesโ€‹

โŒ Wrong: 10,000 = ใ˜ใ‚…ใ† ใ›ใ‚“ (juu sen) โœ“ Correct: 10,000 = ใ„ใก ใพใ‚“ (ichi man)

โŒ Wrong: 300 = ใ•ใ‚“ใฒใ‚ƒใ โœ“ Correct: 300 = ใ•ใ‚“ใณใ‚ƒใ

โŒ Wrong: Grouping 1,234,567 like English (1,234,567) โœ“ Correct: Group like Japanese (123,4567)
