Months (がつ)

Pattern: [Number] + がつ

Most months follow a simple pattern: number + がつ

April	四月	し がつ	⚠️ shi gatsu
May	五月	ご がつ	go gatsu

August	八月	はち がつ	hachi gatsu
September	九月	く がつ	⚠️ ku gatsu
October	十月	じゅう がつ	juu gatsu
November	十一月	じゅういち がつ	juuichi gatsu
December	十二月	じゅうに がつ	juuni gatsu

Month Exceptions (⚠️)

April and September use different number readings that must be memorized — they do not follow the standard number + がつ pattern:

• April: しがつ (shigatsu) - NOT よんがつ
• September: くがつ (kugatsu) - NOT きゅうがつ

Days (にち/か)

Regular Pattern: [Number] + にち

Most days follow: number + にち

Examples:

• 11日 = じゅういち にち (juuichi nichi) - 11th
• 12日 = じゅうに にち (juuni nichi) - 12th
• 15日 = じゅうご にち (juugo nichi) - 15th
• 25日 = にじゅうご にち (nijuugo nichi) - 25th

Exception Days (Must Memorize!)

Many days have irregular readings that must be memorized:

Memory Aid

• ⭐ Special words — 1st (ついたち) and 20th (はつか) are completely standalone words with no relation to any number pattern
• ⚠️ Pronunciation exceptions — 14th and 24th use よっか instead of よん, deviating from the expected pattern
• Days 2–10 all use native Japanese readings (和語) and must be memorized individually

Common Day Mistakes

❌ Wrong: 1日 = いちにち → ✓ Correct: ついたち

❌ Wrong: 20日 = にじゅう にち → ✓ Correct: はつか

❌ Wrong: 14日 = じゅうよん にち → ✓ Correct: じゅうよっか

Years (ねん)

Pattern: [Number] + ねん

Simply read the year as a number followed by ねん.

Example: 1983

• せん きゅうひゃく はちじゅう さん ねん
• sen kyuuhyaku hachijuu san nen

Example: 2025

• にせん にじゅう ご ねん
• nisen nijuu go nen

Saying Dates

Japanese dates follow the order: Year → Month → Day

[Year] ねん [Month] がつ [Day]

Example: September 14, 1983

Full Date: 1983年 9月 14日

Reading:

1. せん きゅうひゃく はちじゅう さん ねん (1983年)

• Year: 1983

2. く がつ (9月)

• Month: September

3. じゅうよっか (14日)

• Day: 14th

Complete: せん きゅうひゃく はちじゅう さん ねん く がつ じゅうよっか

Asking About Dates

• なん がつ なん にち です か？ - What month and day is it?
  • く がつ にじゅうよっか です (September 24th)
• たんじょうび は いつ です か？ - When is your birthday?
  • く がつ じゅうよっか です (September 14th)
• なん ねん うまれ です か？ - What year were you born?
  • せん きゅうひゃく はちじゅう さん ねん うまれ です (1983)
