Expressing Obligation: なければ

Pattern: なければ (ならない/いけない)

These patterns express strong obligation or necessity.

Two Main Patterns

Pattern 1: なければ いけない

[verb ない form without い] + なければ いけない

Literal meaning: "If (something) does not happen, you can't go."

Examples

• べんきょうしなければ いけない - I must study.
  • benkyoushinakereba ikenai
• いかなければ いけない - I have to go.
  • ikanakereba ikenai
• たべなければ いけない - I must eat.
  • tabenakereba ikenai

Pattern 2: なければ ならない

[verb ない form without い] + なければ ならない

Literal meaning: "If (something) does not happen, it won't do."

Examples

• べんきょうしなければ ならない - I must study.
  • benkyoushinakereba naranai
• いかなければ ならない - I have to go.
  • ikanakereba naranai
• たべなければ ならない - I must eat.
  • tabenakereba naranai

ならない vs いけない

Both patterns mean the same thing and are largely interchangeable.

• いけない is slightly more common in everyday speech
• ならない sounds slightly more formal or literary

How to Form: [verb な-form]

To create the な-form needed for these patterns:

1. Start with the ない form of the verb
2. Remove the final い
3. Add ければ

Formal and Casual Forms

Formal

[verb な] + なければ いけません

More polite form used in formal situations.

• しゅくだい を しなければ いけません - I must do my homework.
  • shukudai wo shinakereba ikemasen
• あした はやく おきなければ いけません - I must wake up early tomorrow.
  • ashita hayaku okinakereba ikemasen

Casual

[verb な] + きゃ いけない

Very casual, shortened form used among friends.

• いかなきゃ いけない - I gotta go.
  • ikanakya ikenai
• たべなきゃ いけない - I gotta eat.
  • tabenakya ikenai
• べんきょうしなきゃ - I gotta study.
  • benkyoushinakya

Note: Often shortened even more to just ~なきゃ!

Negative: Must Not

[verb て form] + は いけません

Use this pattern to express prohibition - something you must not do.

Examples

• たべては いけません - You must not eat.
  • tabete wa ikemasen
• いっては いけません - You must not go.
  • itte wa ikemasen
• しては いけません - You must not do (that).
  • shite wa ikemasen
