How It Works

[Verb て-form] + は + いけません / だめです

Both expressions indicate that an action is prohibited or not allowed. The て-form of the verb is followed by は (wa) and then いけません or だめです.

てはいけません — Formal Prohibition

Use てはいけません for formal situations, rules, and regulations.

Examples:

• ここで たばこを すっては いけません。 — You must not smoke here.
  • koko de tabako o sutte wa ikemasen.
• しゃしんを とっては いけません。 — You must not take photos.
  • shashin o totte wa ikemasen.
• この みずを のんでは いけません。 — You must not drink this water.

てはだめです — General Prohibition

Use てはだめです for general prohibitions, often in daily conversation.

てじゃだめ — Casual Prohibition

In casual speech, は becomes じゃ. This is common among friends and family.

• うそを ついちゃ だめだよ。 — You shouldn't lie.
  • uso o tsuicha dame da yo.

Casual Contraction: ちゃ vs じゃ

The contraction depends on how your て-form ends:

If the て-form ends in て → use ちゃ

• たべて + は → たべちゃ (tabecha)
• いって + は → いっちゃ (iccha)
• まって + は → まっちゃ (maccha)

If the て-form ends in で → use じゃ

• のんで + は → のんじゃ (nonja)
• よんで + は → よんじゃ (yonja)
• しんで + は → しんじゃ (shinja)

Simply replace ては with ちゃ, or では with じゃ!
