Formality: ので vs から

ので is more formal than から

• ので → More formal, polite, written

Pattern 1: ので (More Formal)

[verb/adjective short form] (な) ので, ...

Meaning: "Because of A, ... (consequence)"

When to Use な

Add な before ので with な-adjectives and nouns. Do not use な with verbs or い-adjectives.

• とても あつかった ので、アイスクリーム を たべました — Because it was so hot, I ate an ice cream.
  • totemo atsukatta node, aisukuriimu wo tabemashita
• あめ が ふった ので、うち に いました — Because it rained, I stayed home.
  • ame ga futta node, uchi ni imashita
• しずか な ので、べんきょう できます — Because it's quiet, I can study.
  • shizuka na node, benkyou dekimasu
• がくせい な ので、わりびき が あります — Because I'm a student, there is a discount.
  • gakusei na node, waribiki ga arimasu

Pattern 2: から (Less Formal)

A から, B short form + ん です

Meaning: "Because of A (reason), B (consequence)"

  • byouki da kara, gakkou ni ikanai n desu
• おかね が ない から、かえない ん です — Because I don't have money, I can't buy it.
  • okane ga nai kara, kaenai n desu

Pattern 3: し (Multiple Reasons)

Use し to stack multiple reasons together, similar to "and also" or "not only... but also...". The final clause states the conclusion or consequence.

Examples

• やすい し、おいしい し、このみせがすきです — It's cheap and also delicious, so I like this restaurant.

• さむい し、つかれた し、うちにいたい — It's cold and I'm tired, so I want to stay home.
  • samui shi, tsukareta shi, uchi ni itai
• しずか だ し、きれい だ し、このまちがすきです — It's quiet and beautiful, so I like this town.
  • shizuka da shi, kirei da shi, kono machi ga suki desu
• べんきょう する し、しゅくだい も する し、いそがしい — I have to study and do homework, so I'm busy.
  • benkyou suru shi, shukudai mo suru shi, isogashii

し vs から / ので

Use し when you have two or more reasons to give. Use から or ので when there is a single clear cause.

• ❌ あつい から、つかれた から、やすみたい (unnatural with から repeated)
• ✓ あつい し、つかれた し、やすみたい

Quick Comparison

ので - More formal, written, polite speech, objective tone
から - Less formal, casual conversation, subjective tone

な with nouns/な-adj: ので requires な, から uses だ

Same Sentence, Both Ways

Formal (ので):

• あめ が ふった ので、いきません - Because it rained, I won't go.
